What Is Organic?

For those of you who aren’t familiar with organic, here is a little rundown for you. Organic materials are grown without the use of harmful chemicals and pesticides. Those who grow these organic ingredients keep their products clear of synthetic fertilizers, sludge from sewers, genetically modified organisms, or radiation that has been ionized.

The farmers who are responsible for the growth of these much safer alternatives use all renewable resources and conserve soil and water to help enhance the quality of the environment. This is part of the reason why organic products are so much more expensive. More work and better ingredients and materials go into the making of all natural and safe products.

Before any product can be deemed “organic”, the farm where the product is being made has to be inspected by a Government-approved inspector who will do the certification. All of the rules must be followed in order to meet the USDA organic standards. Also, the companies that handle or process all of these foods and materials must also be certified.

Non-Organic Mattress Dangers

Traditional crib mattresses contain synthetic fabrics, toxic foams, petroleum based chemicals, and are treated with toxic fire retardants. The chemicals that can be found in these beds can create off-gassing, which is very popular in memory foam mattresses, which can expose your baby, and potentially your family, to dangerous chemical levels while everyone is soundly sleeping.

It can be hard to know how much gas can be building up inside of these and emitting while your baby is sleeping, which is why it is important to consider organic mattresses. If you think about it, polyurethane is made for insulation, car parts, and adhesives. Would you want your baby to sleep on a mattress made from the same materials as the inside of your walls and the plastic that makes your car parts?

When babies breathe in these plasticizers and get them on their skin, they are at a higher risk for reproductive harm, asthma, cancer, kidney and liver damage, and early onset of puberty. These plasticizers make up a whopping 30-40% of the vinyl surface.

It is understandable that organic can be more expensive than non organic and there really is no solution to this dilemma except to get as close to “all natural” as your budget will allow.

The Truth About Organic Mattresses

I know that this may not be what you want to hear, but the truth is, the crib mattress itself cannot be labeled as organic, just the fibers that are used inside. The outer layer of these mattresses are usually made from vinyl or some other flame retardant. Legally, they have to be flame resistant, unless you have a prescription for a non-flame retardant mattress.

The Global Organic Textiles Standards require that all the fibers and fabrics that are used within the mattresses must be made with from certified materials based on the National Organic Program. If the mattress has materials such as fire protection or innersprings, they must also meet stringent non toxic standards.

So, in a sense, the mattress itself isn’t completely organic, but the inside is and the outside is labeled as non-toxic. Still, if you have a waterproof type, it isn’t going to completely organic, but may have a different type of cover that is less toxic than standard polyurethane or vinyl. You can opt for a mattress that is not waterproof and may have a completely organic cover.

Organic Filling Material

Now that you know a little about what organic truly is and how it is given the name, legally, let’s talk a little bit about the materials that are inside of the mattresses more in depth.

Cotton

Organic cotton is the most used and highest rated filling material for crib mattresses because it is natural, firm, breathable, and non-toxic. Since it is made without harmful chemicals and replaces traditional fillings such as polyurethane foam, it will not burst into flames or release toxic fumes if ignited.

Cotton is also naturally comfortable and soft and is used in everything from personal care items such as cotton balls and make-up removal pads to towels and diapers.

Fun fact - the value of organic cotton in 2010 was $5.16 billion dollars. Imagine what it could be today!

Wool

Organic wool is another popular mattress filling since it is naturally fire resistant and dust mites hate it. Wool is made from the fleece of sheep and anything used to feed the sheep must be certified organic from the last third of gestation and beyond.

There are no synthetic hormones and genetic engineering is prohibited-as well as synthetic pesticides. Also, the sheep cannot have pesticides used on them to rid themselves of parasites. Farmers must use clean pasture management and a healthy diet in order to keep their immune system running at a higher level than normal to keep the pey critters off of the sheep.

The benefits of organic wool outrank most of the other materials because it is chemical free, is a natural insulator and temperature regulator, it’s durable, naturally flame resistant, alleviates pressure, us renewable and sustainable, and is usually hypo-allergenic.

Latex

Latex is a natural rubber that is used for the filling of these mattresses. It may be frustrating to try and find an organic bed that is also made from latex because even the natural latex can have questionable chemicals that have been added into the equation.

Also, latex is not exactly known for its hypoallergenic properties, it is actually quite allergenic and could lead to anaphylactic shock if your baby has an allergy to latex, unbeknownst to you.

Mattress Cover Material

It is vital that crib mattresses are waterproof because there are going to be leaky diapers, spilled bottles and sippy cups, throw up, drool and so much more that could harm the mattress top. This wetness can also lead to mildew, mold, bacteria, and fungi, which is also a health hazard.

It is very important to not allow any kind of moisture to get into the mattress, which is why a non-toxic plastic covering is essential. Remember that you can’t do an organic vs non organic comparison when it comes to waterproof tops because they cannot be certified organic, although they are non-toxic based on high standards.

Yes, some plastics that are used on crib mattresses are extremely toxic, such as vinyl, but not all of them are the same. Organic filling plus non-toxic covers are probably the best you could get when it comes to being as close to organic as possible.

Top Organic Crib Mattress Reviews

Be advised that not all of these mattresses will be 100% organic. If they aren’t, they will be as close as possible since as stated above, a crib mattress isn’t completely 100% organic.
