A review of the Linenspa Premium Mattress Protector

A review of the Linenspa Premium Mattress Protector

Mattresses, at least good ones, aren’t cheap – heck, even the cheapest ones cost more than a hundred bucks. Moisture happens to be one of the biggest threats to an exposed mattress – it seeps in, creates odor, encourages the growth of bacteria, and causes it to become a breeding ground for dust mites and bed bugs.

Ironically, our bodies are an excellent source of moisture during the night – our sweat alone, if allowed to seep into the mattress, is sufficient to cause the unpleasant consequences discussed above. And this is discounting the occasional accidents that happen to kids and indisposed elders.

Suffice to say, mattresses need to be protected if they are to remain conducive to sleep, and a mattress protector is the answer. But not everyone wants to spend a chunk of money on an aftermarket accessory either, especially if they’re strapped for cash.

Linenspa has a product that may help you out in such a scenario – here is my in-depth Linenspa Mattress Protector review to help you decide if it is worth your investment.

Pros

  • Cheap
  • Essentially soft and unobtrusive.
  • Easy fit / remove.
  • Core protection features work reliably.
  • 10 year warranty.

Cons

  • Made entirely of plastic materials, so it does make some noise and feel slightly crinkly.
  • Sensitive to improper maintenance.

Enter the Linenspa Premium Waterproof Mattress Protector

This offering from Linenspa is meant to be a budget solution – so don’t attach premium quality, luxurious aspirations to it.

That said, the Linenspa Premium Waterproof Mattress Protector, made out of polyurethane and vinyl, is designed to provide reliable protection against fluids, allergens and stains for your mattress, at a price that amounts to a tiny fraction of even the cheapest mattress.

The thin, breathable top layer is intended to provide a comfortable sleeping surface, minus the typical plastic feel associated with budget protectors (as per the manufacturer). The layer is hypoallergenic too, so it keeps common allergens such as dust mites and fungi from entering your mattress. Polyurethane backing keeps the fluids out.

Given its cheap nature, it is an excellent choice for securing your guest mattress from a night time spill (particularly when young children are involved), or even for your own mattress’s security, given you’re able to tolerate the problems associated with plastic.

Here’s what I found while testing the manufacturer’s claims:

Features and Benefits

Protection

According to Linenspa, their mattress cover offers total protection against fluids, while also providing essential shielding against common allergens. From what I’ve gleaned from user feedback, the cover definitely lives up to its claims as far as waterproofing goes.

Even after the fluid has been allowed to stay on the surface for several hours, there is virtually no seepage – it stays as a pool on top of the protector, and does not even slide away to the sides and compromise the mattress from there.

The underlying thin plastic film also does its job in terms of keeping dust mites out – but since the cover is five sided, the back of your mattress is exposed - so you shouldn’t expect this protector to safeguard against bed bugs effectively.

Build

The product has elastic sides which go over the mattress like a fitted sheet, so putting it on and removing it for washing is no hassle. The surface is 100% polyester – soft brushed, so it is softer than run-of-the-mill covers made out of regular plastic. The underlying backing is 100% polyurethane, to keep fluids out of the mattress completely.

The top surface has been made breathable, according to Linenspa, to prevent their customers from sleeping hot. In spite of this, it able to keep out dander, dust mites and dead skin flakes, all of which can seriously compromise the lifetime of your mattress and your own wellbeing.

One noteworthy aspect of this protector is that even its elastic sides have been made waterproof – so even if the liquid slides to the sides, it won’t make its way inside. This is a common complaint with cheap protectors, that their waterproofing is limited to the top surface only. Depending on the size you opt for, the protector can fit mattresses with depths ranging from 6 to 18 inches.

Comfort

Even though the product is touted as being noiseless and soft, I knew it would be a surprise if this really was the case. A sub-$20 protector made primarily from plastic simply can’t achieve that. Indeed, this was the case: while the noise was lower than some of the competition, it was definitely present and perceptible.

The softness was adequate, considering the cost and materials involved, but for the more sensitive sleepers, I’ll recommend using an extra cover on top to negate the somewhat wrinkly feel of the protector. However, in spite of the noise and slight crinkliness, the mattress cover was not obtrusive enough to disrupt my sleep.

Thermal Profile

The cover is ultra-thin, with a breathable top layer, even though it is made of polyester and polyurethane, it performs rather admirably in terms of dissipating heat. Multiple users have reported that it stays surprisingly cool during the night, but I suspect part of it has to do with the ambient conditions they’re sleeping in too.

Warranty

A 10 year limited warranty is provided by Linenspa, covering defects in workmanship and materials. Normal wear and tear is not covered, as well as damage caused by incorrect maintenance. Pretty much standard fare as far as terms and conditions are concerned, but still, this goes a long way to indicate that they have confidence in their offering – even if it costs under 20 bucks.

Care Instructions

With low end products like these, it is important to follow the care instructions to the hilt if you want them to perform for a long time. With this protector, make sure you use only a tiny amount of washing powder. Tumble dry after, on a low heat setting.

Using a setting higher than 125 Fahrenheit will affect the waterproof layer. Indeed, this could be the cause for some of the negative feedback this product has received for its waterproofing (that the majority praised quite clearly).

User Feedback

As discussed above, the biggest reservation about the product that I gathered from user feedback was that its protection did not last after multiple washes. Since the manufacturer has deliberately made it very thin (so as to be unobtrusive), it is very much possible that rough handling could compromise its lifetime.

There were no major complaints of odor, and the allergen barrier seems to work as advertised too. In terms of surface feel, there were both those who found no plastic sensation at all, and those who couldn’t tolerate it. I guess it comes down to personal preference, but if you fall in the latter camp, it is nothing an extra sheet on top won’t solve.

This seems to be one of those rare cheap products with a warranty that actually delivers if needed – since there were multiple complaints, and the support department did resolve them.

Conclusion

Ultimately, I find this to protector to be a very reasonable bargain for its asking price – provided you follow proper care and maintenance instructions, it yields dependable essential protection for your mattress against threats like fluids, allergens and odors.

Obviously, given its polyester / polyurethane composition, it won’t work in a luxury bed setup where everything has to be completely comfortable and in harmony, but the thinness of this protector does make it low-profile enough to have negligible impact on the sleep quality of all but the most sensitive sleepers.

Combine this with a 10 year warranty that the manufacturer does live up to, and this is one of the best budget mattress protectors out there.

Malouf Mattress Protector Review

Check Price

The biggest problem with mattress protectors flooding the market nowadays is that – in spite of being functional in terms of waterproofing and allergen blocking – they run hot and noisy during the night. Basically, you have to compromise on the quality of your sleep to ensure that the quality of your mattress is not compromised!

I think, and you’ll probably agree, that this renders the whole point of having a good bed void – fortunately, some manufacturers also share this view, and one of them is Malouf. Although their Sleep Tite line of mattress protectors has something for all budgets, they’ve taken the time to create higher end protectors that expressly provide essential protection without making your night a hot mess.

One of my favorites from among their higher priced offerings is the Sleep Tite Encase® Omniphase™ Mattress Protector, which uses proprietary materials in its construction to minimize heating during the night. Impressed as I was with Malouf’s claims about its performance, I decided to do an in-depth Malouf mattress protector review to provide an honest appraisal of its capabilities to my readers.

Pros

  • Soft and comfortable top surface.
  • Tencel fiber wicks away moisture.
  • Omniphase material actively regulates surface temperature.
  • Reliable core protection.
  • Protects against bed bugs, in addition to other common allergens.
  • 15 year limited warranty.

Cons

  • Expensive.
  • Not completely free of plastic sensation.
  • Difficult to put on mattress alone.

Enter the Malouf Sleep Tite Encase® Omniphase™ Mattress Protector

Malouf have an established reputation as a manufacturer of high quality, dependable bedding solutions – and on the surface, the Encase Omniphase mattress cover seems to promise as much.

‘Omniphase’ is the name given to the special material used in the protector to make it feel a lot cooler than the competition, and the cover also uses ‘Tencel’, a proprietary fabric, to enhance its moisture removing ability, so you don’t have to sleep in a pool of your sweat (or worse), as is common with low-budget offerings.

Besides this, the protector is six sided, and uses patented Micro-Tite zipping technology to keep bed bugs, among other allergens, out. All these are pretty sweet features, and point to a product that can be used as part of a premium bedding setup where comfort and relaxation are prioritized.

Malouf Encase Sleep Tite Mattress Protector

However, we can’t really take them at face value – and that’s why I’ve done a feature by feature investigation to ascertain the truth in these claims.

Construction

The protector has a six-sided form factor, pretty much identical to an encasement, as opposed to the more prevalent five sided, fitted-sheet style favored by protectors in general. A layer of phase changing material (Omniphase) is incorporated to promote temperature regulation, so that the protector feels just right in a wide range of ambient conditions.

Six Sided Protection

Tencel fabric is used to take moisture away from your body, instead of having it pool up and affect your sleep. The protector uses a lab-certified H2Pro® liquid-proof membrane, which is touted as being both breathable and quiet.

These materials are assimilated in a ventilated, durable, elastic, and most importantly, waterproof protector that envelopes your mattress completely. The mattress cover can fit mattresses ranging from 6” to 22” in depth, which is quite a wide margin compared to the market average.

That said, installing this six sided protector may be an exercise in frustration for a lone individual – I personally was unable to figure out how to put on the cover over my 18” deep mattress by myself, and had to invite a friend over for tea to coax them into helping me!

Protection

The H2Pro membrane is responsible for basic waterproofing and allergen blocking (I’m talking about dust, dust mites, dead skin, dander and the like). Tencel fabric then wicks away the moisture from the product, thanks to its superior breathability and absorbency, compared to even cotton based protectors!

You would be concerned that if the protector absorbs fluids, it may not be easy to get rid of the accumulated mess even after laundering. However, I found that after a prolonged spill test, the protector works just as advertised: it absorbs the fluid without letting it seep to your mattress, and you can easily wash it out via a standard wash and dry cycle. No hint of coloring remains after the protector has been allowed to dry.

In terms of allergen control, the protector performs completely satisfactorily – the six sided, tightly zippered, elastic enclosure that it creates ensures no pests can compromise your mattress from any angle. Bed bugs, in particular, are kept out effectively in this manner (since regular five sided protection leaves the mattress’s back exposed: a perfect entry point for these nasty insects).

Protection Features

Surface Feel

Tencel Surface

Once again, Tencel saves the day: besides being breathable and absorbent, it is soft too, therefore you can expect a snug, unperturbed sleep with this protector. Bear in mind though that the H2Pro membrane still produces a slight plastic sensation – and depending upon your tolerance (and the thickness of your bedsheet) – you may find it hard to ignore.

For the vast majority of consumers though, the product was comfortable and synergized well with their mattresses.

Heat Retention & Sound

This is where, according to the manufacturer, the Encase protector really shines – here’s what I think:

In terms of getting rid of excess heat, the phase changing material used in the protector does indeed work by absorbing excess heat and releasing it away from the surface so you get a cooler sleep experience. Plenty of users, too, have attested to its superior cooling as compared to run of the mill products.

That said, your body type, the overall composition of your bed, the ambient conditions, will all play a role in how the protector performs; it’s just that this one will perform better than regular plastic / cotton. And if, given you’re sleeping in tropical weather, you do sweat a bit – the Tencel will simply wick away the moisture, thereby still ensuring a much more comfortable experience than cheap protectors.

Omniphase Material For Heat Dissipation

That said, the protector wasn’t completely noiseless – better than conventional covers – but definitely audible. However, by now, I’ve learned to accept that all manufacturers tend to exaggerate this point to attract consumers.

User Feedback

The general feedback from users has been very positive – something I can attest to after scouring dozens of Malouf mattress protector reviews left by consumers online. Lavish praise has been directed at its snug fitting, softness, core protection and coolness.

There have been very scattered complaints pertaining to waterproofing failure, and some issues with noisiness, but the majority is clearly happy with the product’s performance. In any case, even if you do run into a hiccup, the 15 year long warranty has you covered.

Care Instructions

The protector should be washed initially before using it. You can launder it in either hot or cold water, but don’t exceed the 120F mark. A mild non-alkaline detergent is recommended, one that doesn’t contain any harsh whitening chemicals or bleach.

While line drying is the recommended way, you can tumble dry on low heat, too, along with your other bedding accessories. Just makes sure you don’t over dry or use a temperature setting beyond 125F, as this will cause damage to the waterproof membrane and compromise the lifetime of the product. Ironing and dry cleaning are not allowed.

Warranty

There’s a 15 year limited warranty accompanying this protector, which covers defects in workmanship as well as mattress protector materials. The warranty also covers any stains on the mattress caused by these defects, provided you’re the original purchaser of the protector.

A sales receipt is required for processing the warranty. Note that the warranty shall be void if you do not follow care instructions properly, or otherwise subject the protector to abuse.

Conclusion

It is rare to find a mattress protector that exudes an aura of quality, but as is evident from my Encase mattress protector review, this one seems to nail it almost perfectly:

With its combination of laboratory tested, proprietary design practices and materials, it achieves dependable essential protection against fluids, allergens and bed bugs, while also staying cool and comfortable for the most part. While a slight plastic feel still escapes the protector, it is much more subtle than what is typically expected in mattress covers.

The protector is doubtlessly expensive, but its multitude of premium features, coupled with a 15 year warranty (that even covers mattress stains to an extent), more than justify the expense for someone in need of a high end protective solution for their luxury mattress.

A Little Background On The Company

Founded over two decades ago, AllerEase, in their own words, are ‘the leader in allergen barrier bedding’. While this is a tall claim, it is indeed true that they specialize in woven bedding fabric that serves to isolate the mattress from nearly every allergen out there.

Their products are affordable for the mainstream consumer, and are tested and certified from Good Housekeeping Seal.

What Can You Expect From AllerEase’s Mattress Covers?

Material Type

Inorganic

For the majority of these products, the top layer and the waterproof membrane layer are made out of plastics i.e. polyurethane and polyethylene. The obvious reason for this is that plastic is a cheap material, and serves as an excellent barrier against all potential threats to a mattress.

But since it isn’t breathable, it does tend to run hotter than say, a latex or cotton mattress protector. This is reflected in several complaints from consumers of sweating excessively while using these products. Then again, lots of people have spoken the complete opposite: stating that they did not experience any perceptible heating.

This leads me to believe that both personal tolerance, and the ambient temperature and humidity conditions, will affect how these covers perform – in other words, you may want to avoid them if you live in a tropical climate.

Organic

For those who can’t handle plastics, the manufacturer has an organic offering that has a top surface made of organic cotton – although the 100% claim seems a bit doubtful. This particular product does not have an antimicrobial chemical sprayed on it either.

Keep in mind that the manufacturer has made this one five sided, instead of the six sided form factor followed by the plastic models, which means it won’t offer much protection against bed bugs. Furthermore, the cotton is by no means waterproof – you’ll need to add a second waterproof layer on your own if you want that.

Having said that, breathability gets a boost, so sweating and heating are appreciably reduced.

Functionality

While far from premium quality, Allerease protectors definitely work as advertised: the underlying polyethylene based membrane keeps fluids, dander, pollen, dust mites and other common allergens out of your mattress.

The fabric is also impermeable to bed bugs, and is given an anti-bacterial finish that stoppers the onset of odor causing bacterial growth. The encasement is able to easily stretch to fit up to 17” deep mattresses, but as noted by some users, may require a second pair of hands in the case of larger sized mattresses.

The protectors are six sided, as opposed to the typical five sided products in the market, so they envelope the mattress from all sides, which makes them effective against bed bugs. Furthermore, they utilize a Velcro flap that completely covers the zipper, so there’s no chance of any bed bug ingress from that weak spot either.

Comfort

Inorganic

Speaking with complete honesty, the protectors that are made of plastic do carry some wrapping paper-like feel on their surface, in spite of what the manufacturer claims. That said, the top fabric on the better models has been made soft and comfortable, so if you can tolerate the wrapper like feel, you’ll be able to sleep fine – a reasonable compromise when you’re on a strict budget.

Additionally, some of the higher end Allerease products feature ‘temperature balancing technology’ and/or a breathable top layer which, judging by user feedback, does marginally improve the thermal profile of the protector.

Organic

The organic cotton mattress protectors offer improved breathability, and a genuinely softer surface feel – but not exactly on par with premium organic protectors, not surprising considering how cheap they are priced.

Affordability

Allerease mattress covers manage to shine in this department – even the most advanced offering is priced under $75 – which means that for a fraction of what your expensive mattress cost you, you can shield it against harm and enhance the value of your investment.

Reliability

The manufacturer claims that there products have been tested by an independent lab, and have been given the Good Housekeeping Limited Warranty Seal, which guarantees a refund of the purchase cost up to $2000, or total repair / replacement, if the manufacturer does not do so. They only award this seal to products that have been tested and found to adhere to a certain standard of quality.

This is all dandy, but to be sure, I scoured through feedback from users and did find some complaints pertaining to complete waterproofing failure – i.e. fluid seeping through to the mattress. These covers are made in China, so this kind of random defect is to be anticipated (no matter how unlikely) – I’ll advise you to test the protector’s waterproofing on a secondary mattress before you put it on a super expensive mattress just in case.

Warranty

AllerEase has an in-house 10 year limited warranty policy for all their mattress and pillow protectors, provided the product has been bought in the US or Canada. It covers defects in materials and workmanship, and excludes fiber compression, punctures, tears or damage stemming from incorrect laundering.

It isn’t the most generous policy, but this makes sense given the small price tags on these products.

Care Instructions

To prevent the layers from sticking and/or deforming, you’ll need to exercise some care when washing an AllerEase protector. The manufacturer advises machine washing warm, and only using non-chlorine based bleach if necessary.

The protector should be tumble dried on low heat and promptly removed. In case you’re using a gas dryer, dry the protector in ten minute intervals on low setting. Additionally, these protectors should not be ironed.

Top rated AllerEase Zippered Mattress Protector Reviews

AllerEase Waterproof Allergy Protection Mattress Protector

Key Points

  • Polyester with polyethylene film.
  • Available in Twin, Full, Queen, King sizes.
  • Waterproof.
  • Allergen Proof.
  • Machine Washable.

Made out of polyurethane plastic, it is reliable enough at keeping damage from night time accidents at bay, and can also handle allergens such as dust mites and dander pretty effectively. Like its siblings, it forms a six sided, zippered enclosure for your mattress, but don’t confuse this for bed bug blocking:
This protector lacks the bed bug barrier that is present in the manufacturer’s more expensive products, so don’t count on it to keep these pests out – also, it doesn’t have an anti-microbial finish, so it won’t prevent fungal / bacterial growth in the mattress either – in other words, in the event of an incident, you’ll need to clean it promptly to make sure no fluid seeps into its inner layers (not that this is likely).
In all honesty, I can only recommend this protector for cool and dry climates, where humidity and heat can’t promote the growth of bacteria. Also, if your mattress has bed bugs (or there has been in an occurrence related to them in your home before), you’ll want to pass on this one for health reasons.

Pros

  • Extremely cheap.
  • Performs core protection effectively.

Cons

  • Not breathable.
  • Noisy.
  • No bed bug protection.

Recommended For

This mattress cover is suited to individuals who want extremely inexpensive, barebones protection against fluids and basic allergens.

AllerEase Bed Bug Allergy Protection Zippered Mattress Protector

Key Points

  • Polyester with polyethylene film.
  • Available in Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King sizes.
  • Waterproof.
  • Allergen Proof.
  • Bed Bug Proof.
  • Machine Washable.

This one builds over the features of the lowest priced offering by throwing bed bug protection into the mix without raising the price appreciably.

It performs pretty much identically as all the other plastic covers from the manufacturer in terms of allergy protection and fluid blocking, and the zippered enclosure combined with the bed bug barrier does its job satisfactorily too.

Besides the characteristic wrinkling (that you may need to conceal with a top sheet), the protector will also run hot in humid / tropical climate zones, so it may not be the best choice if you live in such a place, especially because these conditions promote bacterial growth, and this protector doesn’t have an anti-microbial finish either.

Pros

  • Adds bed bug proofing with minimal price hike.
  • Workable waterproofing and allergen protection.

Cons

  • No bacterial protection.
  • Poor breathability.
  • Will have to tolerate plastic like feel.

Recommended For

Ultimately, it’s a low cost option for someone who wants basic bed bug protection and isn’t too particular about heat or noise.

AllerEase Maximum Allergy Protection And Bed Bug Mattress Protector

Key Points

  • Polyester with polyethylene film.
  • Available in Twin, Full, Queen, King sizes.
  • Waterproof.
  • Allergen Proof.
  • Bed Bug Proof.
  • Machine washable, soft top fabric, breathable layer.

This is the middle ground of the manufacturer’s lineup, providing an economical blend of features that focus on basic protection as well as comfort, and is thus suited to those who want a bit more comfort than what an extremely low-budget plastic protector offers.

The fluid, allergen and bed bug protection seem to work as advertised, judging from consumer reviews. As expected, the majority of the complaints were directed towards the ‘wrinkly feel’ and ‘heating up’, in spite of the fact that the manufacturer has made the top softer and the bottom layer more breathable.

This is because the materials used are still polyurethane and polyethylene i.e. plastics that are inherently poor thermal conductors. That said, the protector should feel a lot more comfortable and somewhat cooler than the cheaper offerings I’ve covered above – just nothing close to luxury.

Pros

  • Combines protection with improved comfort and durability.
  • Essentially reliable performance.

Cons

  • Doesn’t ward off bacteria.
  • Doesn’t completely eliminate heating / crinkly surface.

Recommended For

This protector is suited to those who want a bit more comfort than what an extremely low-budget plastic protector offers.

AllerEase Ultimate Protection and Comfort Allergy-Protection Mattress Protector

Key Points

  • Polyester with polyethylene film.
  • Available in Twin, Full, Queen, King sizes.
  • Waterproof.
  • Allergen Proof.
  • Bed Bug Proof.
  • Anti-microbial, machine washable, soft top fabric, temperature balancing, breathable layer

This is the best mattress cover that AllerEase has to offer, incorporating temperature balancing enhancements as well as a soft top fabric. This makes it suitable for those who demand the coolest, most comfortable sleeping experience on a very strict budget.

Just as every other offering from AllerEase, the protector is waterproof, and allergen resistant. It is also bed bug proof, with a zippered closure that completely seals its six sided envelope. The cover has also been given an anti-microbial finishing on its surface to prevent odorous bacterial infestation – but this is a chemical, and may not appeal to everyone.

Thanks to the soft top fabric, the plastic like feeling of its cheaper sibling is somewhat mitigated, and a breathable layer as well as the AllerEase’s signature ‘temperature balancing’ technology ensures much less heat retention and sweatiness.

Note that while most users have been pleased with the protection and comfort it offers at what is still a remarkably low cost, even these enhancements haven’t been able to completely address the plastic feel and heating concerns.

Additionally, some users have had issues with the size, claiming that the protector ended up being larger than their mattress – so you’re advised to pay close attention to the recommended thickness quoted by the manufacturer.

Pros

  • Still quite cheap.
  • Soft top fabric enhances comfort and reduces plastic feel.
  • Somewhat improved thermal dissipation and breathability.
  • Anti-microbial and completely bed bug proof.

Cons

  • Still not as cool as other materials.
  • Won’t perfectly fit shallower mattresses.

Recommended For

It is suitable for those who demand the coolest, most comfortable sleeping experience on a very strict budget.

AllerEase Naturals Organic Cotton Allergy Protection Fitted Mattress Protector

Key Points

  • Organic cotton with plastic sides
  • Available in Twin, Full, Queen sizes.
  • Allergen Proof.
  • Machine washable, naturally breathable

Standing apart from most other offerings from AllerEase, the Naturals Organic Cotton protector is meant for individuals who want affordable allergy protection minus the plastic and potentially harmful chemicals.

The protector has a five sided profile, as opposed to the regular six sided style observed in the rest of the lineup, and the manufacturer claims that it is made from pure organic cotton that is more breathable (and decidedly softer) than the plastic surfaces of the other products.

The improved breathability leads to less heating and sweating, but the protector is still woven tightly enough to prevent the accumulation of dust as well as other common allergens. The fitted construction makes it easy to put on and remove, so washing the protector isn’t as much a chore as with the plastic variety.

However, one major drawback with this protector is that it isn’t waterproof – you’ll have to throw in a second sheet underneath it to protect the mattress against spills. Since it doesn’t cover the back of the mattress, it doesn’t effectively ward against bed bugs either.

About the 100% organic cotton claim: the top is indeed made from cotton, but the sides and the film underneath are definitely plastic – somewhat misleading, but then again, what else can you expect at this cheap a price?

Pros

  • Organic cotton top.
  • Does not use a chemical anti-microbial finish.
  • Improved breathability.
  • Inexpensive.
  • Easily installable / removable.

Cons

  • Not waterproof.
  • Not bed bug proof.
  • 100% organic cotton claim is misleading.

Recommended For

The Naturals Organic Cotton protector is meant for individuals who want affordable allergy protection minus the plastic and potentially harmful chemicals.

Conclusion

I tend to avoid passing definitive judgement when it comes to bedding, because it is too subjective a matter – however, in this case, given the incremental nature of this limited lineup (evident from the Aller Ease mattress cover reviews I’ve done above), singling out the best pick isn’t that difficult:

AllerEase Ultimate Protection and Comfort Allergy-Protection Mattress Protector is the clear winner thanks to its combination of effective water-, allergen- and bed bug-proofing, with dedicated features to make it cooler and more comfortable to sleep on. It may not be perfect, but this is the most reasonable compromise between functionality and comfort as far as this manufacturer is concerned.

It also helps that the price is still pretty much within the reach of budget bound consumers. There’s a 10 year warranty included, along with backing from Good Housekeeping, which should have you covered in case you get a defective product (this can’t be discounted because these protectors are of Chinese make).

As far as the organic cotton cover is concerned, I’d advise saving for a better option since this one isn’t even fully organic to begin with, and lacks core protection features for which you’ll be paying extra anyways.

For a person like me who has a higher core body temperature than average, sleeping during summer can be a tough situation filled with fidgeting; constant shifting of positions to find the perfect cool spot. I usually relied on my ceiling fan to cool the room down to a bearable temperature, but during extra hot summer days, the fan it just circulated the warm air around leaving me drenched in sweat and void of any energy by the time I woke up the next morning.

Usually, cooling mattress pads tend to be cheaper than bed fans as fewer amounts of wires and electrical items go into their production. However, this can vary from model to model.

Portability

Bed fans are usually more bulky and heavier; not ideal for the type of person who travels a lot. On the other hand, cooling mattress pads are generally lighter and they are easy to shift according to the consumer’s preferences.

Cooling Techniques

Bed fans circulate the hot air under the covers and cool it in the process in a different range of speeds. A cooling mattress pad is kept on your bed and you directly lie above it, and it controls your body temperature in direct contact with your skin.

They disperse and distribute the heat of your body around the pad and prevent them from becoming centralized. Some pads use a gel-based material while others use Thermocules or tubes

A Cooling Mattress Pad Fit for You

Apart from the obvious differences in type of cooling material used and the portion of money you’re willing to allocate into buying your mattress pad, other aspects of the cooling mattress pad should be considered before you make a purchase.

Temperature fluctuation

If you are a person whose body temperature seems to fluctuate often or a person who wants to make use of a mattress pad during summer as well as winter, you might want to look into one that gives you the ability to increase or decrease your body temperature at will. Surely, this added feature will cost you more money but in the long run, it might be worth it. However, if you do not require heating from your mattress pad, avoid extra costs by just buying mattress pads that only offer cooling.

Usage during menstruation

A majority of women suffer from cramps in various parts of their bodies during menstruation. If you like to use heat to alleviate the pain of your period cramps, you might be interested in buying a microwaveable, gel based cooling mattress pad which can double as a heat pack.

Affected by the ‘Graves disease’

As this disease keeps the patients affected by it generally warm, it might be best for them to invest in a cooling mattress pad that offers keeps the temperature low all night long, instead of just a few hours.

Level of physical exertion at your job

The amount you have to physically exert yourself at your workplace can be a good indicator of the type of cooling mat you may need. For example, if you work a construction job and come back home with sore feet or extreme exhaustion, a mattress pad offering immediate cooling might help you out a lot, and have you feeling better instantly. A refrigerated gel based pad can also do the trick as it offers effective cooling easily.

Aesthetic requirements

If you are a person who likes everything posh and top-notch, it would be better for you to invest in the top-rated mattress pads with cooling that are made with the finest fibres and technology. You may also want to look in their availability of various sizes and colours to match with your bedroom, as most of them just offer the mattress pads in one or two sizes and colours.

Sleeping position

Some people, like me, tend to move a lot during their sleep. If you are one of these people, you might want to pass the gel based mattresses. As they don’t have the firm composure like the ones made out of cotton, shifting positions frequently might make their distribution uneven – which will only worsen your quality of sleep. The bumpiness at certain places would make it only so much harder to rest properly. It may be better for you to find cooling mattress pads that stay stationary, as there are some that also tend to slide and shift.

Maximum Utilization of the Cooling Pad

Pair with a cooling pad for your pillow

If you want maximum cooling through-out your body, you may want to buy a cooling pad for your pillow as well. This will help minimize your hot flashes and be extra effective when maintaining your body temperature.

Refrigerating

This is especially for the gel-based cool pads. For optimum level of cooling throughout the night, keep the pad in the refrigerator 1-2 hours before you go to sleep.

Position

Avoid lying directly on top of the pad by placing a sheet on top of it to ensure that the body heat is absorbed slowly, and that the heat is distributed evenly. This will prolong the cooling effect. However, this will not be necessary for some cooling pads as they will come with a built-in-sheet.

Proper Maintenance

To enhance the durability of the cooling pad, you’ll need to make sure that it is regularly cleaned. Some of them can be washed in the machine, but for those that can’t, use anti-bacterial wipes to wipe the dust that may have accumulated on top of the pad regularly.

Mattress Pad and Mattress Topper: There Is a Difference

A mattress pad generally fastens to the mattress with some form of elastic band or skirting. While it does provide protection, most of the mattress pads don’t necessarily provide as much as pressure relief as mattress toppers do.

A mattress topper goes on top of the mattresses to provide extra support and comfort. It is usually thicker than a pad and it can include foam toppers, featherbeds etc. Firm mattress toppers can be made out of several types of materials, with each material enriching your sleep experience in a different way.

Types of Mattress Toppers

There are different types of mattress toppers that you’ll find in the market, with each catering to your different necessities.

Memory Foam

This type of topper is one of the most popular ones in the market. This type of topper offers adequate support and pressure relief for people with lower back pain and back problems. It can also come with different types of inner layers including gel and visco; offering more choices than other types of toppers.

Due to its polyurethane build, it can provide more comfort to the body through its compression and reflex function. It can also isolate individual motions, i.e. even if you toss and turn during the night, your partner will not be disturbed.

Although cheaper than its latex counterpart, one of memory foam’s disadvantages is that it can lose its shape. It can form a depression in the part of the topper where you usually sleep and thus, it can give you the feeling of “sinking in”. Memory foam also might not be the best choice for you if your core body temperature is very high as it is known to retain heat.

Latex

Latex is the optimum type of topper for people who like to sleep on a firm surface. If you sleep on your back, the firmness of latex toppers can mitigate your lower back pains by properly aligning your spine and providing sufficient support. Unlike memory foams, there is no possibility of odour coming from latex toppers.

They also don’t trap in heat. As this material is resistant to dust mites and mould, it might be the perfect choice for people with skin allergies. If you are on the heavier side, you should definitely consider choosing this type as it can maintain its shape for a longer period of time due to its springy and resilient nature. However, you should check whether or not you are allergic to latex before you use this type of topper.

Feather

This type of topper is known for being luxurious. Made from feathers, while it does provide a rather soft and comfortable sleeping experience, it might not be best suited for people experiencing intense lower back pain and back pain in general. It also does not retain body heat and is also odourless. However, it requires regular shaking up and ruffling for it to maintain its shape.

Wool

This might not be the type of topper you are looking for if you have back pain as it provides very low amount of back support and comfort. Its durability and temperature regulating abilities could impress you, but if you really want to alleviate your lower back pain and back problems, you might not want to purchase this type of topper.

Things to Consider Before Making a Purchase

Weight

Your weight can also affect the amount of comfort and support provided by your mattress topper. If you are on the heavier side, there is a higher chance that your memory foam topper develops a depression faster leaving you feeling uncomfortable.

Sleeping position and type of back pain

There are different sleeping positions recommended for people suffering from different types of back conditions including lower back pain. For example, people suffering from Osteoarthritis or Spinal Stenosis may prefer to sleep on their sides with their knees curled up but people with Degenerative disc disease may prefer to sleep on their stomach. Some type of mattresses might sink in when you sleep on your side, so you should see if the topper is suitable for your sleeping position or not.

Level of firmness

Usually, memory foam toppers have a lot of options when it comes to the degree of firmness. However, some people might not know about their options, and they might end up with a topper that’s either too firm/ too soft for them. But you should also keep in mind that not all products offer toppers with different levels of firmness. There is a misconception that firm mattress toppers relieve all types of lower back pain and back pain in general. People suffering from conditions like Bursitis might actually end up feeling more discomfort if the mattress is too firm.

Core body temperature

If you have a high core body temperature like me, you might want to opt for a topper that can elevate pain relief by also regulating the temperature of your body. Toppers providing proper air ventilation or having moisture absorbing abilities could definitely enhance your sleep quality.

The Best Mattress Protectors On The Market - Buyers Guide

Keeping your mattress protected is the best thing that you can do to ensure the longevity of your bed. Not only that, but it also helps to keep your warranty intact. If anything were to spill on it, your warranty would be void. I can personally attest to the fact that mattress companies do not take back beds that have been soaked in sweat or have stains on them. So, with this said, I want to make sure that you are able to easily find the best mattress protector for your bed to keep your mattress fresh, clean, and covered.

What Are They For?

As I said earlier, mattress protectors help to ensure that your bed stays protected to make it last longer and keep it covered under warranty, but, they are not only good for that. They are ideal for allergy protection, bedwetting protection, comfort and more.

Allergies

Dust mites are one of the leading dust allergy triggers while you are sleeping or in bed. If you suffer from sneezing, runny or stuffy nose, red, itchy or watery eyes, wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath, wheezing, or itching, you probably have a dust allergy that is set off by the mites or pet dander. Not only can you suffer from those various symptoms, but a dust mite allergy is a very common cause for asthma in children. One simple way you can prevent these allergies is to protect your bed with a hypoallergenic protector.

Bedwetting

Also known as “nighttime incontinence”, bedwetting is a common occurrence in children and elderly adults with bladder control issues. The most common protector for this issue are made from vinyl and can sometimes be referred to as “plastic sheets”. They can be easily wiped clean and can last quite a few years if taken care of properly. If one of these are on your bed, you are helping to keep moisture away from the mattress, which can cause a void in your warranty and a not so nice smell in your room.

Comfort

Yup, it is as simple as that, a protector for comfort. Some people do like to keep their mattresses protected from sweat, dust, dander, spills, and bed bugs, but they also like to add just a touch of softness as well. You can find mattress protectors that have comfort fill that acts like a pillow top for your bed. So, instead of spending the extra money on a fancy pillow top mattress, you can save a few hundred or even thousands of dollars by investing in a fluffy cotton protector.

Types Of Mattress Protectors

Unlike other products, you can get mattress protectors in a variety of different textures, materials, depths and more because not everyone has the same preference. I would like show you how many different options you have when it comes to purchasing the best mattress cover for you.

Membrane Versus Non-Membrane

These options are ideal for those who suffer from allergies. Membrane covers help to protect your bed by offering a waterproof top with a non-fabric barrier. You can also get this option with a zipper that helps to protect your mattress from bed bugs.

Non-Membrane covers feel similar to cotton and have a tightly woven fabric that does not allow the allergens to pass through the barrier. They are silent, lightweight, and comfortable, but they do not have the waterproof effect like the membrane covers do.

Fitted Versus Zippered

When choosing between fitted and zippered, you should keep your strength and bug protection preference in mind. If you want to protect yourself against bed bugs and other critters that could enter your mattress, you are going to want a zippered protector. This will ensure that the entire bed is protected because it wraps the entire thing from top to bottom.

Fitted protectors are quick and simple to install and they do not involve you picking up the mattress. They are just like a fitted sheet and usually have elastic edges to keep it in place. These types, however, only protect against moisture, sweat, mildew, etc. They will not keep the bed safe from bugs.

Organic Versus Non-Organic

You read it right, there are such things are organic mattress protectors. Organic protectors are made from all-natural fibers that were grown without the use of harmful chemicals, pesticides or synthetic fertilizers. They also help to provide a healthier sleeping environment by protecting against allergens with their hypoallergenic properties. These are great for those who have allergies, eczema, delicate skin or asthma.

If you are an an environmental advocate, it is another reason to go with organic because they are better for the environment. Instead of using potentially harmful and dangerous pesticides, farmers use sustainable farming methods when growing their cotton, helping to make these protectors biodegradable. On the downside, these are more expensive since they are organic.

Also, make sure you are actually getting a 100% natural cover if you are choosing organic. Sometimes, companies will tell you that their product is organic when they really aren’t. All you need to look for is the GOTS label. This stands for Global Organic Textile Standard and is only used if something is 100% natural.

Non-organic mattress protectors are usually made with flame retardants and other unhealthy chemicals and materials such as vinyl and urethane, which are most commonly used in the waterproof covers. Non-organic products are filled with toxins and may not be as healthy for you or your children. The only upside to these are that they are less expensive and have more options.

Vinyl Versus Urethane

This applies to a mattress protector that is deemed “waterproof”. I can’t tell you how many times I have heard someone complain that their protector was not 100% waterproof. Well, the problem with this is that not all of these covers are made with the same materials and are sometimes only “water resistant” rather than waterproof. Also, not all waterproof protectors are made the same and each have their own different features.

A vinyl barrier tends to not be breathable, but they are more economical. They are also very noisy and take more time to dry. If you are someone who does not like to be warm while you sleep, vinyl would not be an ideal choice for you because they tend to be hot to sleep on.

A vinyl barrier tends to not be breathable, but they are more economical. They are also very noisy and take more time to dry. If you are someone who does not like to be warm while you sleep, vinyl would not be an ideal choice for you because they tend to be hot to sleep on.

Urethane barriers, on the other hand, allow heat transfer and they will stay cool during the summer and warm in the winter. They are generally more quiet than vinyl and they wash and dry at a faster rate of time. The downside is that they cost more, but, they do last longer, so the additional cost is probably well worth it.

How Do They Differ?

Contrary to what some may believe, mattress protectors differ from mattress pads and encasements for many reasons. A lot of people will buy a pad thinking that it will protect their bed, but they don’t always do that, this is why it is important to know the difference.

Protectors

Protectors are usually like a fitted sheet. They fit on your bed, based on size, and help to protect your mattress against allergens, moisture, bacteria and more. These are generally much cheaper than encasements and pads, but they offer more protection against liquids. Although, this is not always the case if the protector is not completely waterproof.

Encasements

Encasements are more for bed bug protection. Yes, they do offer complete coverage for your mattress, but they are not always waterproof. They will keep the bed bugs away, but they will not keep liquid out which could void your warranty.

Toppers

A mattress topper is more for comfort than protection. They are usually in memory foam or eggshell form and are a few inches thick. A lot of people will go out and buy a pad but find that they get ruined just as quickly as a mattress without a protector on it. These are also way more expensive with little to no protection.

The Best One Is..

After reviewing everything about all of these products, there is no doubt in my mind that the Sleep Tite by Malouf® Hypoallergenic 100% Waterproof Mattress Protector is the ideal choice here. Yes,the other ones are great too, but this one is the only one that can fit 16 different size mattresses, including cribs and cots.

There were very minimal reviews stating that it wasn’t truly waterproof and it is free from 3 main harmful chemicals. If I were to put a mattress protector on my bed, this one would be it. It may be the most expensive one on the list, but usually the rule of thumb is that you get what you pay for, and if I am paying more for this one, I would hope that it gives more than the others.

Finding The Best Heated Mattress Pads On The Market

Let’s face it, there are just some nights when staying warm is almost impossible, despite your best efforts. If you put on extra layers you’ll end up too hot, too many comforters have you tangled and you probably end up pushing them off anyway. If you have a partner, sleeping with them may also become irritating because you can’t agree on a temperature. This is where heated mattress pads come in.

If you go out and invest in the best heated mattress pad there is, you won’t be fighting with yourself or your partner over the warmth of your bed any more. Or, if you just want to be warm throughout the night, these are an ideal solution.

Pad Versus Blanket

There have been a lot of speculation as to whether heated blankets are better than heated mattress pads. Personally, I like heated mattress pads for safety reasons, but that’s just me. Let’s take a look at the difference between blankets and pads:

Heated Pads

The heated covers for your mattress are much easier to use and are more accommodating than the heating blankets. This is because once you put them on your bed, they stay there. You don’t have to fuss with your partner over the blanket, there are no wires in your face, and if you spill something on it, you can wash it, as long as it is waterproof. Some of the heated pads have dual controls that allow you and your partner to be at different comfort levels while you are sleeping.

Heated Blankets

With heated blankets, there is always the risk of fires if you leave it balled up. The reason for this is because once the blanket it bunched up, the heat had nowhere to go and it bursts into flames. The heat that is generated within the cord has the potential to fray, also increasing the risk of fire.

Also, with these blankets, it is said that extended exposure to the ELF’s or extremely low frequency, can have negative health effects which includes an increased risk of cancer. Because these blankets have the potential to sit on the body for hours at a time, the electromagnetic field in it may have a negative effect on the fetus of a pregnant woman.

Who Are They For?

Heated mattress pads are ideal for anyone who wants to get into a warm bed at night and stay warm throughout the night. This could be especially helpful for someone who requires heat therapy for various medical conditions such as arthritis, chronic back pain, sports injuries, etc.

The reason heat is used for therapy is because the heat brings more blood to the injured area which helps to stimulate the damaged tissues. Not only that, but it also has a direct soothing effect to help relieve pain and stiffness. Heat should not be used on new injuries because it could make the problem worse.

Heat therapy is especially useful for those who suffer from arthritis because as stated earlier, it helps to sooth stiff joint and muscles that may be tired. Arthritis can be extremely painful, especially first thing in the morning and these heated pads can help to alleviate some of these symptoms, making mornings much more tolerable.

Types Of Heated Mattress Pads

Before you go out and buy any old heated mattress pad, you should know that there are different kinds, not all of them are the same. I always thought that they were made with just one type of material, I guess I was wrong. With that said, check out the different materials that can be put into the construction of these electric pads.

Natural Materials

One of the most common natural materials that are used in the heated topper construction is wool. This is usually used on the outer layer of it and it is flame resistant, which is a great choice in material for an electrical bed accessory such as this.

Wool is also great for retaining heat and and they absorb extra moisture. This means that if you happen to sweat, the moisture won’t cause moist bedding, which is nice, no one likes to wake up with wet bedding. Usually, top rated heated mattress pads are made of a high quality natural material such as wool. The best part, it can be easily cleaned because instead of the dirt getting inside of the pad, it gathers on top of it and can be wiped away in a breeze.

One of the other natural materials that can be used in the construction of these pads is cotton. Cotton is a great choice when choosing a heated pad because it is a natural fiber. It has great breathability and it wicks moisture away, like wool. It can also help with allergies due to it’s hypoallergenic factors and the fact that it helps to deter dust mites.

Synthetic Materials

Most of the heated mattress pads on the market that are relatively affordable will be made from a synthetic material that has a similar texture to wool. They are usually made from a lightweight fleece material that is soft and cozy.

Polyester is the main ingredient here. Also, if you see a pad that is made with microfiber fleece or plain fleece, it is a type of polyester. They do not breathe as well as the natural materials do, but on the other hand, they are generally more durable. Since it has such great durability, it will last longer than most other heated pads and the wires will stay in good condition for a longer period of time if taken care of properly.

Washable Pads

Yes, it is possible, electric mattress pads can be washable. Usually electricity and water do not play well with each other, but thanks to today’s technology, washing these heated pads are possible.

In order to do this, you have to make sure that the proper wires are removed. You can then launder it at a cool 30 or 40 degrees on a short cycle. You can then either throw it in the dryer on a short cycle or hang it on the line to dry. You should also make sure the pad is completely dry before hooking the wires back up. With each heated mattress pad comes its own set of instructions, so make sure they are followed properly.

I personally like the fact that it can be washed in the washing machine because when I sleep, I sweat sometimes and I would prefer to not sleep on a sweat soaked and stained mattress pad. Plus, it is usually recommended that they are laundered at least twice a year, but it depends on the manufacturer.

Heated Mattress Pad Features

If you like to have some bells and whistles to your products like I do, then you will love this. Heated pads tend to come with a variety of features that can make even the pickiest person happy with their product. So, what are these features that can make a heated pad so special?

Dual Controls

It is not unusual for these to have different heat levels, it is however unique when it comes equipped with dual control zones. This is perfect for someone like my husband and myself because he sleeps warmer than I do. During the winter months he likes to be warmer and I still like a little bit of chill on my side.

These dual controls will allow us to sleep on different levels of heat and we won’t be fighting over whether or not I should turn the fan off. Generally, you can find this feature some of the best rated pads on the market.

Auto Shut-Off

Another feature that I like is the auto shut-off. Most of these pads will come with this setting and will automatically turn off after a certain amount of time to avoid overheating and burning. There have been times when I have turned an appliance on, like a coffee pot, and left it on all day long. When I came home, the bottom of the glass had cracked. If I would have left that on for just a few hours longer, it could have ended worse than it did.

This is another reason why heated mattress pads are better than the blankets. Most of the blankets don’t come with this feature and people have lost their homes because they left their blanket balled up and turned on. So, if you are like me and tend to forget that you turn appliances on, I would opt for a pad that has the auto shut-off feature.

Heating Timer

If you just need the pad on long enough to fall asleep, this would be an ideal feature for you to look for. The timers can usually be set to 1-9 hours. Once you set how long, it will keep you warm for that period of time and then shut itself off. This can help to save money on your electric bill because you won’t be running it all night, just for a few hours.

All of these features are great, but you can never truly know which one could be best for you until you read some of these electric mattress pad reviews.

TOP 5 MEMORY FOAM TOPPERS - BUYERS GUIDE AND REVIEWS

Memory Foam has become a household name. Originally developed by NASA to improve pilot safety, it's seen wide commercial use. Of course we're talking about Mattress Toppers. It's probably safe to say that no other industry has made such wide spread use of the material. Popular advertisement showing a hand impression left in the foam most likely comes to mind.

But what does it mean? Memory foam is designed to give the ultimate comfort, cradling and supporting the body, lessening pressure on the hips, lower back and joints. Let's take a look at the top 5 best memory foam mattress toppers, some key features, and the pros and cons of each topper.

WHAT IS MEMORY FOAM?

First, we need to understand what memory foam actually is. We've already mentioned how it was originally developed by NASA so that immediately makes us thing 'space-age' or 'high-tech' when we see, or hear those credentials plastered across an advertisement. For the most part its true.

It was originally developed back in 1966. In basic terms, memory foam is a polyurethane material combined with other chemicals to increase the foam's viscosity (or, its resistance to deformation) and density (or, how tightly packed the molecules are).

Density, in general, is affected by heat and pressure so when you lay down on a memory foam mattress topper, the combination of your weight (mainly the pressure points in your shoulders and hips), combined with you bodies natural body heat will cause the foam to react and actually firm up, adding support to your body. When applied to a mattress or topper, this feature helps support the body without applying specific points of pressure to the body in the way that springs or coils might in traditional bedding.

As amazing as memory foam can be, it's not perfect for every person. Let's look at some of the benefits and limitations of memory foam.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?

The number one benefit to purchasing a memory foam mattress is the unparalleled level of support and comfort. This is especially true for individuals who suffer from chronic back (especially lower back pain), neck, or hip pain. Due to the nature of the foam and the way its density reacts to your body temperature and the way that it resists deformation once in position, molding itself to your body, it can be like sleeping on a cloud. There is virtually no pressure added to your body. You can see our recommendations for toppers for back pain here.

It molds itself to the body's natural curves and giving support where support is needed, namely the neck and back. At the same time no harsh pressure is applied to the shoulders and hips as you might find with other traditional bedding. For more on how memory foam can help with lower back pain check out LiveStrong.com.

The limitations of memory foam can be a deal breaker for many consumers. We've already discussed how the memory foam reacts to body heat. In one hand, this is what makes memory foam work, on the other hand the memory foam has a tendency to trap your body heat. If you're a hot sleeper than this may be a concern worth looking into. It all comes down to air flow. The more the foam is compressed the less air is able to flow the foam, restricting the heat from escaping naturally. For ways to over come this issue check out HomeGuides.SFGates.com.

The second major limitation is that a major part of memory foam's development is centered around chemicals. For people who are more sensitive to chemicals, they may want to check out a more natural alternative such a latex which is advertised as being 'all-natural.'

One Final Thought

Before we look at the best memory foam mattress topper reviews. It's important to note that by adding a mattress topper, you are adding an additional 2" to 4" to the overall height of your mattress. It's important to count the cost and figure in the possibility having to buy new deep pocket fitted sheets. Deep pocket fitted sheets will give you extra space needed to accommodate the mattress pad. With that out of the way, let's get down to the buyers guide, features and reviews of the top memory foam toppers..

IN CONCLUSION

Like always, finding the best mattress topper to fit your needs is a personal decision.  I know for myself the best memory foam mattress topper, when looking through the options was the Queen Size 3" Thk, 4lb. Density Visco Elastic Memory Foam Mattress Pad Bed Topper felt like the best choice. I can't say the price enthused me too much but after shopping around, you can find a good deal that makes this mattress an affordable option.

I tend to deal with lower back pain and the mattress I have does little to help. In fact, it makes the issue worse. By adding a memory foam topper, I've noticed that the aches and pains that were common with waking up are greatly reduced. The quandary I find myself in is this: I'm also a hot sleeper, but there are ways to combat the heat build up. One way is to use a cooling gel pillow and also to keep my feet uncovered to allow body heat to escape.

I hope you found this article beneficial in your search for the perfect mattress topper.

Bed Bug Mattress Encasements – Reviews And Buyers Guide

BED BUG MATTRESS ENCASEMENTS REVIEWS AND BUYERS GUIDE

Buying a new mattress can be a major purchase for many people. It's not unlike a jet ski that gets pulled out of storage once a week if we're lucky. Realistically, something like a jet ski only sees use a few times over the course of a summer unless we live on the water. Depending on the mattress we purchase, you may be looking at a similar price tag.

Looking for something more for allergies or bed wetting? We recommend using a mattress protector.

The difference, however, is that a mattress is used every night, approximately 8 hours at a time. Thinking about that jet ski, who wouldn't spend the time applying a protective coating, insuring it, and generally babying it with covers and special trailers. So why wouldn't you do the same, or more, for your mattress that sees more use than almost any other purchase you may ever make.

I'm talking about mattress encasements. Let's look at some of the best mattress encasements available, the different types and how they will benefit your mattress and your comfort.

In the showroom when you test out what will soon be your new mattress, it’s impossible to know if you will eventually be faced with bed-bugs, dust mites, or issues with allergens. This could be worse than dealing with a stiff back from a hard mattress. Encasements are designed to protect against those very things. They act like a protective barrier that slips over your existing mattress and makes sure your mattress stays free of the things that keep you up at night. Encasements are also available for box springs as well.

Allergies

Without the proper protection for your mattress, microscopic particles build up within the fabric. These particles consist of dust mites, mold spores, dead or dried skin which can trigger your allergies or even cause asthmatic reactions.

Encasements are designed to create a barrier between you and what is potentially trapped within your mattress. This can be allergens or what is naturally part of the make-up of the bed itself. A lot of mattress’s contain cotton but cotton, even after being processed can still contain trace amounts of the pesticides it was originally sprayed with prior to harvesting. Other synthetic materials are made primarily of chemicals, some of which can be hazardous. Granted some chemicals were used as a flame retardant. Good in the case of a fire but bad on respiratory system.

These factors combined with mold spores, dead skin, dust, pollen and whatever else manages to get itself trapped in your mattress can really make sleeping difficult. These allergens have the same effect that the chemicals would have. Your eyes may become irritated, and it may cause congestion or sinus issues that could easily be mistaken for the common cold but in reality can be much worse. We wonder why we can never get over our allergies while we go to sleep every night on a mattress that is literally making us sick.

Bed Bugs

The most common use for mattress encasements is to protect against bed bugs. Most people never encounter bed bugs but if you have, you'd remember. They may be little more than a black speck, as seen by the naked eye, but these little critters love to bite. Leaving your legs and whatever else it latches onto, red, and extremely itchy. It's the type of problem that has caused hotels to be shut down. Once a problem starts, especially at a place like a hotel, the problem can spread.

It's a problem that needs to be taken seriously. The average bed bug is no larger than 5mm long and to the naked eye, it can look similar to a seed tick. On white linens, they will look like a dark speck. If you see just one, it may look harmless but there is never just one. These pests enjoy feeding on blood and cause skin irritation.

The good news, bed bugs are not known to carry any diseases (unlike the bit of scabies which are known to be contagious). In recent years, the problem with bed bugs have been increasing and this can be due to the amount of people traveling and the lack of prevention. Any pest gone unchecked will eventually become a big problem. The same is true with bed bugs.

By choosing a mattress encasement designed to protect against bedbugs, you will be able to sleep soundly, not worrying about the bite of those tiny bugs.

One last thought

It is important to understand what type of problem you are facing. A bed bug infestation can be stopped by the use of pesticides and then controlled by using a mattress encasement. Scabies on the other hand will cause intense itching usually around the nail or between the toes. They will actually lay eggs under the skin.

These pests can be treated with a topical medication. Most mattress encasements will have a rating or certification defining exactly what they protect against. Before buying a mattress encasement check these ratings and make sure it is the best bed bug mattress encasement for your needs.
